Supercomputing, Science and you! Family Access Day

Date: Wednesday 24 October 2018

Location: STFC Daresbury Laboratory Keckwick Lane Daresbury

Family Access Days at Daresbury Laboratory are a fantastic way to see behind-the-scenes at our world class facilities, speak to the scientists, engineers and other staff who work here and learn about how we study the world around us.

In collaboration with the STFC Hartree Centre, on Wednesday 24th October we are opening up our High Performance Computing facilities within the Hartree Centre at Sci-Tech Daresbury to enable families to explore our exciting computer science facilities and engage with our staff.

This half day event is for family bookings only, all children must be accompanied by an adult. Family tickets are limited and places will be allocated on a first come—first served basis, we will hold names on a waiting list so if you book and are unable to attend for whatever reason, please could you let a member of our team know so that we can offer the tickets to other families on our waiting list!

This is a timetabled ticketed event, for those who have booked; please arrive at 09:15 ready for the 09:30 start time - we'd hate for your group to start without you. Activities will be spread across 4 areas of the campus and will last approximately 3 and a quarter hours:

Area 1 Computing Workshops or Visualisation Suite Experience (45 minutes)

You will have the option to choose one of 4 different 45 MINUTE workshops or experiences:

Option 1 – The Visualisation Experience!

Located at the heart of Hartree’s brand new Visualisation Suite, our staff will demonstrate to families how we use our amazing visualisation facilities to better understand the world around us and make sense of Big Data. Families will see our science come to life in front of them!

Most suitable for ages 12 and up.

Option 2 – The Virtual Engineering Experience!

Set within the Virtual Engineering Centre (VEC) within the Hartree Centre, staff from the University of Liverpool will demonstrate to families how we use visualisation and virtual reality in the Engineering World in this interactive experience.

Most suitable for ages 8 and up.

Option 3 - The Code a Robot Workshop!

Children will get the chance to code and control a Coder MIP robot, and use it to play fun games! Coder MiP communicates through motion, sounds, and LED lights in his eyes and chest. Using sensors families will help him to navigate his surroundings – he will even respond to hand gestures!

Most suitable for ages 8 and up.

Option 4 – Create your own game; Code with Scratch!

Our staff will be offering their expertise to support children and their families to create their own Scratch based Computer code to modify a game that has been produced by our staff.

Most suitable for ages 8 and up.

Area 2 Explore Visualisation interactive activities (45 minutes)

We are opening up four of the spaces within our Visualisation Suite for families to roam around and explore visualisation and coding. Each space will be hosting a variety of computing activities that will enable children and their families to explore, get creative and get interactive with computer visualisations.

Area 3 ‘Supercomputing, Science and You!’ interactive Zone (45 minutes)

Discover what it is that we do here at Sci-Tech Daresbury as you engage with staff in this computing focussed science fair. Amongst other things we'll show you how we are gaining a better understanding of forecasting the weather, helping children at Alder Hey Childrens Hospital, modelling chemistry, and designing new shampoos; we'll even show you how a supercomputer works! We have a variety of exciting and interactive simulations and activities throughout this space to engage your family!

Area 4 Daresbury Lab Family Science Fair

Alongside learning about ourawe-inspiring computer science, families will have the opportunity to discover what happens on the ‘other side’ of our campus. STFC scientists and engineers will be showcasing some of our most exciting science; families will get to see their ‘invisible self’ with in infra-red camera, engineer in virtual reality, and do some ‘dark matter’ craft! This family science fair will have demonstrations and interactive activities for all ages, and will explore a variety of our science; from space rocks to 3D printing!
